new horn for the bike taxi

Friday, June 30th, 2006

I saw an advertisement for an air horn, called AirZound, that blasts short, 115-decibel bursts. The cool part is the compressed-air canister is refillable with a bicycle pump. Well, I finally ordered one for the bike taxi (couldn’t find one in the local bike shops, so I went online).

It’s very loud.

And it’s funny looking.

But it’s very loud.

Well I’m having trouble mounting it. Not the horn’s fault, but I just have too much stuff on my handlebars already. In addition to the brake levers, I’ve got a cool rolling bell that a guy named Scotty gave me, a speedometer, a big headlight, and of course a huge bag/basket. It has to be on the handlebars, though, so I can quickly hit the button to “honk” it at someone (I put “honk” in quotes because “honk” is hardly the right word to describe this enormously loud sound).

The plastic bottle that stores the compressed air has a plastic tube to connect it to the horn, so I’ve got about two feet to work with, and the bottle itself is wrapped in a velcro-like fabric so that it can be easily connected/disconnected to the other velcro-like mount that came with it. I ought to take a picture of all the stuff I have on my bike taxi so you can see what I mean. A picture is worth a thousand words, as they say.
